in an attempt to be a better housewife/homemaker/mom i’ve come up with a new plan for my meal planning and grocery shopping. for july, i made a two week meal plan (fourteen meals), and will repeat it twice. we’re going away one weekend, so i’ll just use those meals from those days to fill in the extra days at the end of the month. some meals are even going to be repeated in the two week cycle.
i then assigned them to a day and will repeat that schedule twice in the month. i took in to account schedules (for the first three weeks in july, jerry has community group on mondays and i have group on thursdays; keeping larger meals for the weekend to accommodate hospitality… things like that) to decide what meals should go on which days.
then i filled in my planner. tuesday is july fourth and we’re having a bbq, so i switched tuesday’s and saturday’s plan for that week.
we’re also having a church picnic the first sunday, and we’re supposed to bring a side. so i switched sunday’s and thursday’s from the following week. and then like i said, we’re traveling, so i’ll just save those meals for the extra days at the end of the month.
so, what i’m hoping this will accomplish, besides taking way less time to plan, is i’m buying what i have already planned to use. in the past, i’ve done it the other way around, buy and then plan. with three kids, it’s not a fun time going to the grocery store by myself, every week, so i typically do the majority of my shopping at the beginning of the month at costco and then fill in (for things like veggies, fruit, milk, bread) the rest of the month at aldi, giant eagle and now the farmer’s market since it’s the summer. jerry’s going to go with us this time, to help manage the kids and my spending 😉
so, you veteran housewives/homemakers/mom, what are some tricks you’ve found to help be more efficient and better at keeping to a food budget? this is one of those proverbs 31 woman qualities that i know i definitely need to (and want to) grow in.
